Long Description and Pictures (jpg, gif, png)

I bought this painting at the estate sale of a 102 year old woman, this painting was her mothers! I asked questions about this - all that was known by the remaining family is this painting is in all likliehood 100 years old or more. It is an original overpainting by the artist (the artist lived mid 1800s to 1906 I believe) - I am still a little unclear of what the term "overpainting" means as I have now heard two different definitions of what that is... It is in wonderful condition, the detail is excellent. I tried to do some research on the artist and found minimal information to my surprise, or perhaps I wasn't looking in the correct places I am not sure. Any information you could provide I would appreciate. My main questions are - I would like to know more about the artist, the style of painting this is, what is an overpainting more precisely, is an overpainting more or less valuable than a regular painting, and what is the value or guestimated value of this painting. Thank you very much in advance.

Sorry about the blurriness of the signature - you should be able to make it out still - for whatever reason the flash was causing me problems when I was trying to photograph that section of the painting.

Although I don't have this up for sale, I am still considering it. Although I will admit I do love the painting.

Overpainting can mean the final layers of paint, over some type of underpainting, in a system of working in layers. It's also a term to mean later paint added by restorers, or an artist or dealer wishing to "Upgrade" a piece to make it more sale able. As far as your painting goes, nobody can make any assessment or valuation unless they physically examine it.

To be exact Vicente de Paredes was born in the mid 1857 and died in 1903. He became known as a painter of historical pieces mostly of the French Court and nobility and was also known for his exquisite bookplates.Marina thinks she might have an oil , I believe she has a print that has been overpainted and think Isabella has the same.  Any eveluation would have to be made by physically seeing the piece ,  Maria might want to sell the frame seperately but the frame will add to the value if she sells it with the piece ,  his market has been a bit up and down.  Based on not being able to see these pieces , I can only make a guess.  A tinted heliogravure on paper, 19 1/2" x 30" , Signed/plate with a  Louis XVI style gilt frame sold back in 2000 for 125 dollars ,   Your pieces would have a value of between 150 to 600 dollars in my opinion. hope this helps
